Moving to a new home is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming if you're not prepared. Whether you're moving across town or just across the hall, here are 10 smart moving tips to help you navigate the process with ease, courtesy of our Deveraux Resident Rewards partner, Total Moving Winnipeg.
1. Start Decluttering Early
The earlier you begin sorting through your belongings, the better. Weeks (or even months) before moving day, start going through closets, drawers, and storage spaces. Donate or sell items you no longer need, and toss anything that's broken or expired. The fewer items you bring with you, the faster and more affordable your move will be.
2. Create a Moving Checklist and Timeline
Avoid last-minute chaos by breaking your move into smaller, manageable tasks. Create a checklist that includes everything from hiring movers and gathering supplies to changing your address and updating insurance. Assign deadlines to each task to track your progress and stay on schedule.
3. Confirm All Arrangements
A few days before the move, double-check all your bookings. Call your moving company to reconfirm details, remind any friends or family lending a hand, and ensure utility disconnections and connections are scheduled. A quick call now can prevent big problems later.
4. Pack One Room at a Time
Tackling your entire home at once can be overwhelming. Instead, focus on packing one room completely before moving on to the next. Not only does this help you stay organized, but it also makes unpacking simpler when you arrive at your new place.
5. Pack an “Essentials” Box
Pack a clearly labeled box with items you'll need right away in your new home. Include toiletries, a change of clothes, medications, chargers, snacks, important documents, and anything your pet may need. Keep this box easily accessible for a smoother first night.
6. Label Boxes Clearly and Specifically
Don’t just write "Bathroom" or "Kitchen" on your boxes. Be specific—like “Kitchen – Pots & Pans” or “Bedroom 2 – Bedding.” Also, note which room each box should go in at your new home. This makes unloading and unpacking much faster.
7. Take Photos of Electronics Setups
Before unplugging your TV, computer, or entertainment system, take photos of the cord setups. These reference images will be a lifesaver when it’s time to reassemble everything in your new space.
8. Protect Valuables and Important Documents
Keep passports, birth certificates, legal documents, jewelry, and valuables with you during the move. Do not pack these items on the moving truck—ensure they’re secure and easily accessible.
9. Arrange for Utilities Ahead of Time
Coordinate with your utility providers to ensure services like electricity, gas, water, internet, and cable are disconnected at your old address and activated at your new one. Schedule these changes in advance to avoid moving in without essential services.
10. Plan for Your First Night
After a long moving day, you’ll want to rest. Make sure your essentials box is handy, your bed is easy to assemble, and you have a plan for dinner - whether that’s takeout or a simple meal you’ve prepared in advance.
A successful move is all about preparation. By staying organized, decluttering early, and planning each step, you’ll be setting yourself up for a smoother transition into your new home. Happy moving!
